DVDs—Television Series
Nip/Tuck season 5, part one

Nip/Tuck: Season Five, Part One
Released in 2008 by Warner Home Video
DVD-Video, English

Reserve

L.A. City of Angels. Tinseltown. La-La Land. The place that's made a bundle selling glamour, illusion and dreams - the perfect place for the newly relocated plastic-surgery practice of McNamara/Troy. It's also the place for Lights! Camera! Scalpels! as Sean and Christian go from consulting on a TV drama about plastic surgery to being on-camera players (and rivals for stardom). It's the place for wavering Kimber to become porn again, for strung-out Matt to try to go straight, for Julia and Christian to rekindle a flame, for all the personal and professional entanglements that are McNamara/Troy. And it's the place for skilled surgical procedures - some silly, some heartrendingly serious. Welcome to L.A.!

Secret Life of the American Teenager

The Secret Life of the American Teenager: Season One
Released in 2008 by Buena Vista Home Entertainment
DVD-Video, English

Reserve

The Secret Life of the American Teenager takes as its premise something that most teen dramas save for sweeps week: a pregnant 15 year old. Created by Brenda Hampton (7TH HEAVEN), the ABC Family series follows freshman Amy Juergens (Shailene Woodley) as she navigates the treacherous nine months to birth. At home, she's flanked by a supportive mother (Molly Ringwald) and a philandering father (Mark Derwin); at school, she's wooed by the sweet-hearted Ben (Kenny Baumann), a boy who didn't get her pregnant but seems willing to help her raise a child. Hampton surrounds her lead couple with plenty of high school drama and every perspective on teen sex, including a promiscuous siren, a "True Love Waits" Christian cheerleader, and plenty of kids keen on the idea but frightened at the actual prospect. Never heavy-handed or titillating for the sake of it, THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER is a kinder and more balanced portrayal of adolescence than TV typically affords. This release includes every episode from the debut season.

Tyler Perry's House of Payne Season 3

Tyler Perry's House of Payne: Volume Three
Released in 2009 by Lions Gate Studio
DVD-Video, English

Reserve

Playwright and movie box office phenomenon Tyler Perry (MADEA'S FAMILY REUNION, MEET THE BROWNS) conquers the time-honored American tradition of the sitcom with this irreverent, zany, occasionally harrowing look at multi-generational family life. Patriarch and fire chief Curtis "Pops" Payne is like a Bill Cosby-Danny Tanner hybrid who's taken some crazy pills and been hit with a mean stick as he doles out such loving insults as insisting his adult nephew C.J. is "beige" rather than black. Not that Pops doesn't have every right to administer some good-natured ribbing; with C.J. and his kids moving in with Uncle Pops's family and Pops's grown son Calvin continually stopping by to mooch money, food, and the washing machine, it's only natural to get a little testy! This batch of episodes 41-60 takes on yet another array of familial and social issues and backhands them into the comedy stratosphere with heart and hilarity.

Robot Chicken Season Three

Robot Chicken: Season Three
Released in 2008 by Warner Home Video
DVD-Video, English

Reserve

Ostensibly about a dead chicken reanimated by a mad scientist and forced to watch endless bad television, ROBOT CHICKEN actually exists as a madcap exercise in cramming as many inane pop-culture references, gags, and juxtapositions into a 11-minute time period as is humanly possible. Created by actor Seth Green (AUSTIN POWERS, THE FAMILY GUY, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER) and ToyFare editor Matthew Senreich (the two met and bonded over their mutual love for action figures and collectible figurines), the Cartoon Network show uses stop-action animation and a host of dolls and action-figures to perform outrageous send-ups of television, film, and postmodern America. This collection presents every episode from the third season of the show, featuring mayhem with Pac Man, She-Ra, Jenna Jameson, Barbie, and Mr. Rogers.
